Garifuna History Live

Check out our latest project, the locals have come together to build an authentic mud home experience. During your visit we have Garifuna artifacts to view, an extensive map explaining the pilgrimage of Garifuna people from ST Vincent to Central America, and where we are today! Garifuna ancestors successfully resisted slavery during colonialism, we have been able to preserve our language, traditions, and spiritual faith practices outside of organized religion. Much of our history is orally recorded. Due to the recent spread across the Americas, our language is at risk of becoming extent.
Garifuna Language: classifies as an Arawakan language, though it is distinct from the Arawakan area of northern South America. In 2008, UNESCO recognized the Garifuna language, along with Garifuna music and dance, as a "Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity". This recognition aimed to raise awareness and promote the preservation of the language.
Early maps of South America have an area named "Garibana", reporting that as early as the 1200's, Garifuna (Kalinago) migrated from Northern South America to Saint Vincent and the lesser Antilles.

From the family
We work hard to preserve our ancestral land and provide local job opportunities. We also take a percentage of our proceeds and donate with respect to Roatan marine life and the health of our eco system, being home of the worlds 2nd largest coral reef.

My mother born in 1935, owned a small shop in Punta Gorda. She would feed and care for the entire village. I am her only child, born in 1950 and my goal is to keep our family business alive in honor of my mother and all elders who came before us. I am most excited about sharing our insulin tea, which has kept my diabetes under control. I was a homeowner and restaurant owner in Brooklyn NY from the early 90's to 2019. What you see now, started as a small cottage on the beach. I once worked three jobs and built little by little, hoping that I would get to enjoy the fruits of my labor during retirement. Here I am living my dream, ready to share it with you. Thanks for stopping by!
Mauricio Flores

Hello there! I was born and raised in Punta Gorda with my grandmother. In the 1950's I had severe asthma. Doctors were unable to help, my grandmother decided to take me in and used herbal medicine to cure my asthma. Until today, I am symptom free. In the 70's my husband Mauricio and I got married. We moved to NYC and built a life together. In 2019 I retired early so that I could join my husband in Roatan, this is when we began to expand our bed and breakfast. I am excited about serving out guest. When I see people visiting, I am filled with joy.
